WOJACK – The Artist

They call him Wojack; born January 7, 1970 in Monterey California and raised in Tacoma, Washington. Wojack’s parents are his earthly advisers and GOD is his spiritual tutor. Wojack’s two brothers, Brian and Bobby are an intricate part of his crew and from the beginning have given their older brother their utmost support. Wojack is not only a brilliant rap artist but an inspirational producer, song writer and is an insightful lyricist. Wojack is well known in the Seattle/Tacoma districts for his amazing ability to verbally communicate throughout his music and spoken word. He’s likening to a chemist in his laboratory spitting out powerful words and revelations of things to come; like wars and rumors of wars. Wojack’s lyrics are laced with apocalyptic revelations of political and revolutionary rhymes.

Like most artists, Wojack began singing in the Church. Wojack said, “God gave me a gift of song, it is imperative that I give him the glory.”

Characteristically, Wojack’s gone through a mental and spiritual transformation. Ever since he was born he has felt the essence of music calling him from the depths, to express his opinion to whomsoever it will. In 1978, he heard his first hip-hop song, Rappers Delight, by The Shugar Hill Gang. After repeatedly hearing the song, he was hooked and from that point, rap music captured his soul and little did he know it would never let go. It was 1984 when he transformed himself from break dancer and hip-hop DJ to a master of ceremony for Short MC. He had built himself a work table equipped with two turn tables, a small Korg drum machine and mixer. He gathered all the rap albums he could find. Wojack began by spinning for small parties at Boys and Girl Clubs and was known as DJ Icy Rock. At the time their were several other crews emerging out of the neighborhood like the Apache Playboys, Casanova Crew, The DCR and Def City Rockers. They all brought hip-hop music to Tacoma. Wojack and his crew were rugged to the bone. They would put on parties and car washes to raise money for jackets, trips and other expenses. They had to stay on top. One day, there was a block party and all MC’s met to battle on the mic. His crew got blasted, dismantled and crushed on the mic by a female MC named Goldie. This was an ego crusher yet it encouraged Wojack to go home and write his very first rap. It took him four times to get started but continued to go over and over his rhymes until he memorized them. He was now ready. Wojack joined the Sir Mix-A-Lot Camp in 1991, as MC Def, member of Criminal Nation however, they endured many problems. They went into the situation blind folded with no lawyers. Criminal Nation was not paid by Nasty Mix Records for their albums sales. The album had been seen in stores from here to North Carolina but Nasty Mix wasn’t paying the group. In 1995, angry and depressed, Wojack stepped out of the music business.

Wojack stepped away from music and took some steps to gather himself in the war zone that had created in Tacoma during the mid-nineties. In ’96 after hooking up with Just Cash Records to promote a project he was working on, he had a second son Keilan. This new birth was accompanied by the soon to follow death of his relation with Just Cash. After the album was completed, Wojack had a deal with SOLAR (Sounds of Los Angeles Records) in L.A., but the distribution deal fell through and after this episode, Wojack-dejected and upset left the arena of Hip
Hop once again. Feeling used, Wojack left the game only to return with a vengeance to reclaim the crown he earned as a sophomore. Wojack started going to Canada and the people immediately responded in awe to his music. He decided to make an album while in Canada. He created what he considered to be “a blue print of how this Armageddon is going down” in reference to the recent September 11th, New York City Trade bombings and subsequent attacks on Afghanistan. Wo quotes “when they start stereotyping people and lockin’ cats up, the youngsters will need some generals in the streets. I’m a survivor, aka Wojack Tha General.” The album was made in Canada at Fiasco Brothers studio. Wojack and fans were very impressed with the album. In 3 months, Guerrilla Music was complete. Wojack then went on a promotional tour to in Los Angeles where he made much progress with the album. This is a very dangerous hour, but, it is an hour filled with great opportunity. Music allows me to cross barriers; therefore I’m able to reach a world wide audience that I would otherwise never touch, if it had not been for the World Wide Web. Welcome to the world of Wojack the poet/ prophet’s inspiring words are rhythmically fused with the pulsing beats of hip-hop. . .
